10 Health Benefits of Chia Seeds to Improve Your Health

I don’t know about you guys, but chia pets were a huge thing when I was growing up. You put the seeds over a pot that’s shaped like one of your favorite cartoon characters and watch the “hair” grow rapidly.

The seeds that were used to make these plants are also seeds that can be used to greatly improve your health.

Maybe surprisingly, chia seeds are one of the healthiest things you can actually put in your body. Being loaded with nutrients, they play a vital role in providing your body with everything it needs to be a well-oiled machine.

10 Health Benefits of Chia Seeds

health benefits of chia seeds

Amongst the healthiest foods on the planet, chia seeds are something that you should have.

They look like basic tiny black seeds that would probably have zero health benefits. If anything, they look like a food that is only added to other foods just to add more texture to a meal.

If you don’t know what chia seeds are, they are tiny black seeds which come from a plant that’s related to the mint family.

The ancient Mayans and Aztecs were very heavy users of chia seeds because of their health benefits.

Speaking of benefits of chia seeds, below you’ll find 10 health benefits that chia seeds are going to provide you. You will then see that they are much more than a tiny black seed.

Packed with Antioxidants

Antioxidants are key to when you want to have and maintain a healthy body. Chia seeds are extremely high in their antioxidant content.

The fats that chia seeds contain are protected by the antioxidants in them. Without the antioxidants, the seeds would go bad in a hurry.

Antioxidants are the key to a lot of factors with your health. Something notable that they protect against is free radicals.

Free radicals are dangerous molecules that can create numerous amount of dangers for you.

Protecting yourself against these will help you have a longer life.

High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are usually something that you find in fish oil, which also has a ton of health benefits for you as well.

Chia seeds actually contain more omega-3s than salmon. This says a lot about how much is actually in these tiny seeds.

Although chia seeds may have a higher omega-3 content than some fish, plant omega-3s aren’t nearly as effective for our bodies as fish omega-3s. Both are slightly different and our body struggles to convert plant omega-3s to something that we can use efficiently.

However, this doesn’t mean that you should stay away from them. The omega-3s found in chia seeds are still going to be great for your health and should be something you give yourself on a regular basis.

Reduces Blood Sugar Levels

Your blood sugar levels are extremely important when it comes to your health, especially if you’re a diabetic.

Diabetics need to have a constant monitor of their blood sugar levels.

When your blood sugar levels are too high, you are putting yourself at a much greater risk for chronic diseases. These are going to be diseases that you may never actually recover from.

Consuming chia seeds can help with insulin resistance. This means that your blood sugar will be more under control. You probably won’t be seeing nearly as many spikes in your blood sugar.

So, combining chia seeds with foods that you know are going to spike your blood sugar levels, like carbohydrates, will help your body maintain a regular blood sugar level after consumption.

Aids in Weight Loss

chia seeds

Everyone has a little bit of weight they probably want to lose, right?

This is probably why chia seeds play a massive role in a lot of diets that are out there. One diet, in particular, that chia seeds are a huge help in is the ketogenic diet.

Chia seeds have a unique ability to absorb large amounts of water that’s in your system. This means that the seeds actually expand in your stomach thus making you feel more full after a meal.

Your body isn’t going to absorb and digest food faster. If anything, your body is going to slow this absorption of food. This means you aren’t going to eat nearly as much food. When you consume less food, you’re going to start losing weight at some point.

The protein in chia seeds will also aid in this.

Be careful, consuming too many chia seeds at once is going to cause you to feel bloated and nobody likes that kind of feeling.

Aid in Inflammation Reduction

If you’ve had to deal with inflammation in the past, then you know exactly how much of a struggle it can be. Eating chia seeds can be extremely helpful for anybody that may be dealing with chronic inflammation.

Some inflammation is good for your body because it helps your body heal and fights some bacteria, but too much inflammation is going to become painful and cause you to have a much less satisfying lifestyle.

Chia seeds benefits allow you to fight some of this inflammation. Sometimes your body overdoes it with the inflammation and this causes a lot of issues.

Combining chia seeds with a healthy diet will allow your body to have the inflammation it needs while at the same time, not overdoing it.

High in Protein

Surprisingly, chia seeds can provide you with an adequate amount of protein. There isn’t an exact number of grams of protein, but chia seeds are about 14% protein.

For a seed that’s so tiny, that is a ton of protein.

Chia seeds also have essential amino acids that your body can use.

For a plant based protein, chia seeds really pack a massive punch.

Lower Risk of Heart Disease

It’s pretty obvioius that your heart health should be at the forefront of your mind when you’re really taking a deep dive into your overall health.

A healthy heart typically means that you’re a generally healthy person.

When it comes to chia seeds and your heart health, they are great for reducing your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is too high, this could cause a lot of dangers with your heart.

On top of all the reasons above, the health benefits of chia seeds almost always lead back to improving your heart health.

I wouldn’t recommned solely using chia seeds to improve your heart health. They need to be paired with a healthy diet and lifestyle to have a significant impact.

Plenty of Fiber from Its Carbs

If you don’t know, carbs aren’t necessarily the healthiest thing for our bodies.

Yes, our body does use carbohydrates as an energy source, but when that energy doesn’t get used, our body stores the rest of those carbs as fat. So, if you aren’t an extremely active person, you probably won’t be burning all the carbs you consume.

The good thing about chia seeds is that most of the carb content in them is made up of fiber. Having one ounce of chia seeds will give you about 12 grams of carbs, but 11 grams of fiber.

This is going to be soluble fiber as well. Something that your body needs if it wants to process and pass food through your system without any issues.

Soluble fiber is also going to feed the good bacteria in your gut and grealy improve your gut health.

Easy to Incorporate Into Any Diet

The ease of incorporating chia seeds into your diet should go without a hitch.

They are literally seeds that can pretty much be added to anything. If you feel as though you’re missing a little bit of crunch to your meal, add chia seeds.

If you feel like you need a bit more nutrition in your meal, add chia seeds.

Using chia seeds can be so easy to incorporate into your diet. Grab dry chia seeds and sprinkle them onto anything like they’re salt.

You can even add them to baked goods. Chia seeds aren’t going to change the flavor of anything so you won’t have to worry about the food tasting any different.

Lots of Nutrients with Little Calories

As you can see, chia seeds are very healthy for you. However, what is chia seed nutrition?

You know that chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber and protein. Do they provide you with anything else?

Chia seeds are going to provide you with a lot of healthy fats, most of which are from the omega-3 fatty acids. They are also going to provide you with an adequate amount of minerals like calcium, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorous.

All of which are important and your body needs to maintain its health.

Small But Healthy

chia seed benefits

When you look at chia seeds, you’ll never be able to simply guess the effect they can have on your body.

The above health benefits of chia seeds are something that you should take advantage of. However, I don’t recommend just eating tablespoons of chia seeds. Spread them around in different foods and see how effective they can be for your body.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. Sometimes big things come in small packages.
