9 Health Benefits of Flaxseed Your Body Needs Now

Like chia seeds, flax seeds are amonst the healthiest foods on the planet.

There’s evidence out there that shows exactly how beneficial they can be for your health. Who would’ve ever thought that regular looking seeds could be so healthy for you?

Flax seeds nutrition is something that you really need to take advantage of. You’ll be provided with a ton of vitamins and minerals that are going to improve your body’s health.

Way back in the 8th century, King Charlemagne believe in the health benefits of flaxseed so much that he made laws that his people had to consume flaxseed.

Today, there aren’t any laws about eating flaxseed, but maybe there should be based on all of its health benefits.

9 Health Benefits of Flaxseed

flax seeds benefits

Although flaxseed is a seed, flax seeds benefits are going to probably surprise you. Sometimes some of the healthiest things we can eat are in the smallest packages.

Flaxseed isn’t going to overwhelm you with its size. However, they could overwhelm you with their nutritional impact.

Below are 9 health benefits of flaxseed. These benefits will improve your health so you can live a longer and less problematic life when it comes to your health.

You may not need to take advantage of all the health benefits, but getting them anyway isn’t going to hurt.

High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are extremely beneficial to your health. They are mostly found in fish.

These fatty acids have healthy benefits of their own.

However, there are some people that can’t eat fish for one reason or another. Consuming flaxseed is an excellent way of getting the omega-3 fatty acids that your body needs.

The type of omega-3 fatty acids produced in flaxseed cannot be produced by the human body. So, it’s something that we definitely need to keep an eye on because it’s an essential fatty acid.

One important benefit that this omega-3 fatty acid is responsible for is reducing inflammation. You could say that it acts as an anti-inflammatory.

There are a number of other benefits that omega-3 fatty acids will give you, but they are also benefits that flaxseed will provide you with. They are benefits that we will get into more detail about later on.

Improves Cholesterol

Flaxseed has a great ability to protect your heart in a number of different ways.

Now, we’re going to talk about flaxseed and its ability to lower your cholesterol.

Consuming just a few tablespoons of ground flaxseed on a daily basis can really improve your cholesterol. Your overall cholesterol could lower by as much as 15% and your bad cholesterol could be lowered by nearly 20%.

Continued use of flaxseed in your everyday diet could lead to an increase in your good cholesterol as well. The increase in good cholesterol isn’t going to be massive, but it’s going to be a noticeable difference.

Postmenopausal women can possibly take the most advantage of this health benefit of flax seeds. They will see a steady decrease in their overall cholesterol if they continue to use flaxseed in their everyday diet. This could also be something that is great for menopausal women as well.

Studies show that this could be mostly due to the fiber that’s in flaxseed, which is something that will be talked about later.

Lowers Blood Pressure

Something else that involves your heart. Your heart health is arguably the most important thing you when it comes to your body.

Flaxseed can improve your blood pressure by lowering it. Blood pressure and your cholesterol levels are related. Typically people with better blood pressure also have better cholesterol levels.

When you combine flaxseed with your blood pressure medications, you will see a faster and more significant change in your blood pressure for the better.

The important thing to do is take flaxseed on a daily basis. This isn’t something that you can have one day and expect these massive changes in your health. Incorporating flaxseed into your daily dietary routine is what’s going to cause the changes you want to see.

Helps Control Blood Sugar

Diabetes is a problem that’s becoming worse around the world. In particular, type 2 diabetes. This is all because of your blood sugar.

People can get type 2 diabetes when they have high blood sugar levels because of their body’s insulin resistance or its inability to secrete insulin.

A daily intake of flaxseed can help reduce blood sugar levels by more than 10%. Again, this could be due to the insoluble fiber that flaxseed has.

If you’re a user of flaxseed oil, instead of regular flaxseed, you may not be able to get the same benefits. Flaxseed oil will lack some of the crucial fiber that helps with blood pressure and blood sugar.

Diverse Food for All Recipes

Flaxseed, like chia seeds, is great because they can be used in a wide range of recipes. You can essentially use them for anything.

They aren’t quite as small as chia seeds but they don’t have much flavor, so adding them to nearly anything is going to be good.

Whatever you add them to is going to allow you to get the most health benefits you can out of them.

This is only if you use the actual seeds though. If you’re using something like flaxseed oil, you won’t get nearly as many of the health benefits. Even using flaxseed powder will give you more health benefits than flaxseed oil, but not as much as using the actual seeds themselves.

Helps Control Your Weight

health benefits of flaxseed

Something that becomes more of a problem for a lot of people as they age is their weight. Flaxseed can help you with controlling your weight or even help you with weight loss.

The way flaxseed controls your weight is by helping control your appetite. The fiber in flaxseed helps you have a satiated feeling for longer. This means that you aren’t going to feel nearly as hungry throughout the day.

Having that fullness feeling for longer allows your gut and digestive health to be improved as well.

Positive gut health will allow for your overall health to be improved as well. Having flaxseed will allow this to happen. Having an unhealthy gut will only have negative effects on your body.

A daily dosage of flaxseed will help you maintain a healthy gut on top of the controlled weight.

Help Reduce the Risk of Cancer

Cancer can be a problem for anybody, at any moment in their lives. So, if you can do anything to reduce the risk of this happening to you, you should take advantage of that.

The reason flaxseed is successful at helping reduce your risk of cancer is that it contains a plant compound called lignans.

Lignans have both antioxidant and estrogen properties. Both of these have been known to lower the risk of cancer and improve your overall health.

When it comes to lignans in flax seeds, there is a significant amount more than when you compare it to other plants.

For women, eating flaxseed can significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer. For men, eating flaxseed can significantly reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

The lignans in flaxseed are something that you need to be aware of when you’re looking to improve your health.

High in Protein

Sometimes plant-based proteins are hard to come by, especially when you’re on something like a vegan diet.

Flaxseed is a great place to start when you need protein but for some reason can’t have it from another kind of source.

The protein found in flaxseed is extremely important to your immune system. It improves the function of your immune system and aids in the amount of hunger you’ll experience.

You’ll get the adequate protein that will improve your overall health while at the same time not causing you to miss out on any meals or make you want to eat even more.

Good Sources of Dietary Fiber

The dietary fiber that I’ve been talking about that flaxseed has is something that will vastly improve your health.

Everyone needs to have fiber in their diets. However, most people don’t get enough fiber in their diets on a daily basis.

All you need is about 1 tablespoon of flaxseed a day to get about 10% of the fiber you need for the day.

Think about it, just 1 tablespoon. You can eat that as a quick snack as you’re running out the door for your job.

Flaxseed contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Both of which are the key types of fiber that you need for your gut health.

To keep things simple, the fiber you’ll be getting from flax seeds will allow your body to properly digest and pass all the food that enters your system.

The Seed That Keeps Giving

flaxseed nutrition facts

You don’t need to know flax seed nutrition facts to understand that it’s something you need in your daily diet.

When you have flaxseed, your body is going to become healthier. Eating regular flaxseed will allow you to get more benefits than you would if you had flaxseed in another form.

Remember, this is going to be something that you can snack on and get all the health benefits you need. The little things can make a massive difference in your life and create a much better lifestyle.
