Is Sushi a Good Option if You Want a Healthy Lifestyle?

Some of you may love sushi with a passion. It’s a food that is just unexplainable at times. It can be eaten at all times of the day. But is sushi healthy for you? Is it an option that you need to take a look at and really evaluate its health benefits?

There is no simple answer to these questions because the answers are always dependent on multiple factors.

You have to take a deeper look at sushi to understand if it’s truly healthy for you.

Is Sushi Healthy?

is sushi healthy for you

Sushi comes with so many different varieties that it can easily be said that sushi is both healthy and not healthy for you.

You can probably take anything and make it healthy just like you can take those same things and make an unhealthy version of it.

To say if sushi is healthy is completely dependent on the kind of sushi you’re eating.

There are ways to guarantee that the sushi you’re eating is healthy though. You just need to know exactly what to order.

Keep Sauce Use to a Minimum

Some of us live to have sauces on anything we eat.

Let’s be honest, a good sauce can easily enhance the taste of something. It can make a food go from mediocre to absolutely amazing.

It’s easy to see why people may go overboard with sauces, especially when it comes to sushi. There are usually too many sauces to choose from. All of them delicious in their own way.

The sushi itself is already a burst of flavors but adding the right sauce can make you start drooling on the spot.

The problem with a lot of these sauces is that they are usually high in fat, salt, sugar, and calories. All of these are things that are going to negatively impact your health in the long run of things.

Yes, you may enjoy eating these sauces, but if you add too much of it, you’re making your sushi roll go from potentially healthy to extremely unhealthy.

If you want to have something that is healthy, I suggest skipping out on the sauce or only adding a few drops of it just to get the taste.

Stay Away from the Deep Fried Options

Deep fried anything usually sounds really good, but we all know that it’s never the healthy option.

When something is deep-fried, it’s usually deep fried in oil that’s going to cause your arteries to eventually build up plaque and ultimately clog them.

Although a deep-fried sushi roll may be a bit tastier to some, it’s going to add to your calorie count and salt content.

Salt is needed in our diets but if we have too much, it’s going to cause some serious health issues.

Don’t allow the temptation of something seemingly “tastier” to have a negative impact on your health.

Review the Ingredients

Something that you should always do is look at the ingredients. Know exactly what you’re ordering.

You need to know everything that is about to go into your body. If you don’t do this then you could easily be eating something that isn’t healthy at all.

For example, if there’s a giant piece of candy on top of the sushi, it’s still a giant piece of candy. Just because it’s on the sushi doesn’t change the dynamic of the piece of candy.

Yes, that’s an extreme example but hopefully, you understand the point I’m trying to make.

The ingredients are very important and even one wrong ingredient can make something go from healthy to unhealthy.

Find Rolls with Less Rice

We all know that rice is a staple when it comes to traditional sushi. However, having too much rice is going to make you unhealthy.

Rice is a carb-loaded food. When you consume an excess amount of carbs, your body begins to store it as fat. This is why your body may have some extra fat that you don’t want to have.

Another thing about sushi rice is that it has a bit of a sweeter taste than other types of rice. This is because sushi rice usually has added sugar to it.

When sugar is added to anything it decreases the health value significantly.

If you want to find out about other types of rice and what makes them different from each other, here are 13 types of rice.

The less rice you can get on your sushi, the better it will be for your health.

Choose the Right Fish

Choosing the right fish is everything.

Fish, in general, is one of the healthier foods to eat but some may have some hidden ingredients in them that can cause some health problems.

If you’re unaware, fish tend to have mercury in them which is not good for your health. Some fish have much higher mercury levels than others for one reason or another.

Fish that tend to have lower levels of mercury are salmon, shrimp, scallops, squid, sardines, oysters, and tilapia.

These are the types of seafood that you need to look at when ordering your sushi. Although some of those options may not be considered fish, they are still a good option.

It’s important to remember that some types of fish are genetically enhanced in some ways. They are modified to be bigger so that you get more out of the fish. The downside to this is that the added chemicals to the fish are going to be bad for you.

Make Sure You’re Getting Fresh Fish

how healthy is sushi

Sushi should always be fresh when you’re eating it.

When you’re eating something raw, it can be very easy for it to get contaminated in some type of way in a hurry.

This could lead to getting food poisoning or something even worse.

Make sure that when you’re at a restaurant or store getting sushi, that it has been recently made. If it was made earlier in the day, you need to make sure that it’s been refrigerated properly. This mostly applies to sushi you buy anywhere outside of a restaurant.

Restaurants tend to do a very good job at making sushi fresh.

Moderate Your Consumption

Like anything, too much of something is going to be bad for you no matter what. You could be eating the healthiest food, but if that’s all you eat, your health is going to suffer.

Sushi may seem like a delicacy for a lot of you, so it could be very easy for you to eat it all the time. However, you need to have some self-control.

I get it, some foods are addicting. You don’t want to jeopardize your health because you’re overdoing it on one thing. Sometimes it’s good to take a step back and really evaluate what you’re eating and how it’s affecting your health.

Sushi Can Go Either Way

Is sushi healthy?

To answer the question of whether sushi is healthy or not, it’s all up to you.

It all depends on what you order and how much you eat.

You could always go for a safe option like a vegetarian roll if you like. Just make sure that you’re having some low-carb vegetables with it since you’re trying to eat the healthiest option possible.

I’m not going to say that you should always go for the healthier option because what’s the fun in life if you don’t go a little crazy with what you eat from time to time.

You should always be conscious of what you’re eating though. This is what’s going to make sushi a healthy option for you.
