What Are Prebiotics and How Do They Affect You?

Let’s get this out of the way right now. Prebiotics and probiotics are two separate things. Yes, they are related to each other but they are not the same thing.

You’ve probably heard of probiotics much more than you have prebiotics. You may have never even heard of prebiotics.

Because of this, you may have to ask yourself, “What are prebiotics?”

Luckily, The Daily Nutrition is always here to help and answer these questions that are suddenly burning inside of you. When you’re done with this, you’ll be able to see what makes prebiotics different than probiotics and why you still need them in your life.

What are Prebiotics?

If you’re looking for a prebiotics definition, look no further. Prebiotics are the indigestible fibers that pass through your small intestine and are fermented by the bacteria in your gut.

Having prebiotics should never be overlooked. You can consider them the people behind the scenes that get everything set up for the probiotics so that they can actually shine as the star.

Without prebiotics present, probiotics are going to have a much harder time being as effective as they actually are.

Although prebiotics is considered a fiber, not all fibers are prebiotics. This is an important thing to always remember. You can’t just have any fiber and assume it’s prebiotic. There are certain criteria that fibers need to meet in order for them to be considered prebiotics.

Prebiotic Foods

what are Prebiotics

In order to get prebiotics in your life, you can get them a number of different ways.

You can take supplements for them. There are numerous supplements out there that contain the prebiotics that you need in order to start the process of improving your gut health.

The most popular way to get prebiotics is through your everyday diet. Prebiotics can be found in a lot of different foods.

Remember, prebiotics are a fiber, which is something that everyone needs. Most people never eat enough fiber on a daily basis to help themselves out.

You can find prebiotics in foods like avocados, onions, whole grains, garlic, and leeks. These are pretty diverse foods so incorporating them into your everyday diet shouldn’t be too difficult.

You can also find prebiotics in a lot of vegetables and fruits as well. Tomatoes, jicama, asparagus, kiwi, and apples are good examples of foods that will give you the prebiotics you’ll be looking for.

Some fermented foods contain prebiotics as well. Foods like sauerkraut and cabbage will have prebiotics, but these foods are also going to contain probiotics as well. Because of that, you’ll be killing two birds with one stone.

Prebiotics Benefits

Prebiotics are important for you to take because they set your body up in a way that will allow the probiotics to thrive even more.

You can think of the prebiotics as the fertilizer that will allow the probiotics to grow into beautiful flowers.

This just means that even though it’s not a big necessity, having prebiotics will help you at a much faster rate than normal.

Having prebiotics is going to allow the probiotics to keep your gut healthy. Prebiotics help more of the good bacteria that is in our gut grow. This will allow you to get the most out of the probiotics you take.

The importance of prebiotics cannot be overlooked. If you want to get the most out of the probiotics that you’re taking, prebiotics is a must. If you just want average use of your probiotics, then stay away from prebiotics. Your gut health will suffer a little bit but it’s not completely doomed.

Prebiotics also give your colon a jumpstart down the healthy path. You won’t necessarily need to have probiotics to allow your colon health to thrive in a way that it should.

Can You Consume Too Many Prebiotics?

If prebiotics are only there to help you, then you shouldn’t be able to take too many, right? It’s something where having it should only help you no matter the quantity. This isn’t necessarily true.

There is such a thing as too much of something good can be bad. This is the case when it comes to prebiotics.

The intent of prebiotics is to help you lean towards having better gut health. However, when you take too many prebiotics, whether it be in supplement form or through your food, you’re going to start having a reverse effect. You will be doing your gut more harm than good.

You may start to experience a lot of stomach pain, bloating, and gas if you don’t limit your intake of prebiotics.

The same is true for probiotics as well. You don’t want to have too much. Having too much will only start to make things get worse just when they were starting to get better for you.

Are Prebiotics Necessary?

what are Prebiotics

The short answer to this question is no. Prebiotics aren’t a necessity. The probiotics you consume can still do what they need to do without prebiotics.

However, having prebiotics is going to set yourself up for the most success when it comes to your probiotics. You want the most out of your probiotics, right?

There’s no point in taking probiotics if you aren’t going to try to get the most out of them. Because of this, prebiotics is highly recommended.

Probiotics already help your good bacteria thrive, but prebiotics can help you grow more good bacteria. The more good bacteria you have in your gut, the better.

It’s great having a diverse amount of bacteria in your gut. Some will be bad but if you do the right things, most will be good and taking prebiotics will only help this.

Your gut health can be pristine if you’re able to combine prebiotics and probiotics in a way that both set your body up for the most success when it comes to health.

Prebiotics Are There to Help

As mentioned earlier, you don’t need prebiotics to have good gut health. However, taking them is going to allow you to have the best chance to have better gut health. Even if your gut health is already good, why not make it better.

If you can take something from good to great, especially when it involves your health, your body is going to thank you in so many ways.

You’ll feel more energized throughout the day. Your immune system will be at an all-time high when it comes to fighting any sickness or disease.

Remember, there are simple ways to get prebiotics in your system. You can get them through your regular diet by incorporating certain foods or you can just buy supplements to get the prebiotics you need if changing your diet isn’t going to be part of the equation.

If you’re still skeptical about prebiotics, try to realize that they are only there to help with probiotics. They aren’t going to be there to replace anything the probiotics are doing. Another way to think about is to think of the prebiotics as the passer of a ball while the probiotics are going to score.

The prebiotics is perfect for the assists. They assist the probiotics. This just sets up the chain reaction that will allow your gut health to be improved and this will then lead to your overall health becoming much better in the end.
